Marx \u2014 a writer and <a href=\"https:\/\/techwontsave.us\/\">podcast host<\/a> who critiques tech, media, and cities \u2014 explores how local governments and corporations mobilized to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1016\/j.polsoc.2009.01.006\">have cities accommodate cars,<\/a> leading to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/5\/14\/8605917\/highways-interstate-cities-history\">inextricable dependence<\/a> on them. <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Today, Silicon Valley tech companies are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/02\/24\/upshot\/tech-envisions-the-ultimate-start-up-an-entire-city.html\">getting into the business<\/a> of redesigning American urban life, just as auto companies did previously. Though Big Tech companies claim they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/uber-ceo-travis-kalanicks-gridlock-solution-carpools-for-all-1474986134\">solving traffic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/elon-musk-the-architect-of-tomorrow-120850\/\">climate change<\/a>, Marx argues that the techno-utopian visions around ride-sharing, electric cars, and autonomous vehicles have <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/electric-cars-alone-wont-save-the-planet-well-need-to-design-cities-so-people-can-walk-and-cycle-safely-171818\">done little to truly address<\/a> the root of these problems, and may actually be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-05\/uber-and-lyft-admit-they-re-making-traffic-worse?sref=qYiz2hd0\">making things worse<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A new technology doesn\u2019t change that. If we really want to solve these more fundamental transportation problems that arise from the mass ownership and mass use of the automobile, we need to deal with it at its core. It\u2019s a political problem that has been created over the course of many decades.
