The victims, inevitably, are the low paid workers who now have to find another gig. Note also the disparities in legal rights for workers between EU countries \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>During the pandemic, Gorillas was flush with cash. The company raised almost <a class=\"external-link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/10\/19\/gorillas-grabs-close-to-1bn-series-c-values-the-on-demand-grocery-delivery-biz-at-2-1bn\/\" target=\"_blank\">$1 billion<\/a> in October, an amount even the company\u2019s CEO, Ka?an S\u00fcmer, described as \u201cextraordinary.\u201d But the quick-commerce sector has become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-end-of-klarnas-easy-money-is-bad-news-for-bnpl\/\">another victim<\/a> of investors\u2019 new aversion to loss-making startups as they worry about the economy. Gorillas\u2019 retreat is emblematic of pain being felt across the sector in Europe. Gorillas\u2019 rival Getir said it planned to cut its global head count by more than <a class=\"external-link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/start-up-woes-getir-follows-gorillas-and-zapp-headcount-culls-with-800-jobs-slashed\/\" target=\"_blank\">800 people<\/a>, while Zapp said it expected to <a class=\"external-link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/start-up-woes-getir-follows-gorillas-and-zapp-headcount-culls-with-800-jobs-slashed\/\" target=\"_blank\">lay off 200<\/a> workers, leaving British cities <a class=\"external-link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/delivery\/2022\/battle-for-london-rages-on-as-q-commerce-eyes-path-to-profit\" target=\"_blank\">Cambridge and Bristol<\/a>entirely, and Jiffy has <a class=\"external-link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrocer.co.uk\/technology-and-supply-chain\/jiffy-to-cease-rapid-grocery-delivery-to-become-dedicated-software-company\/667564.article#:~:text=Jiffy%20to%20cease%20rapid%20grocery%20delivery%20to%20become%20dedicated%20software%20company,-By%20George%20Nott&#038;text=Rapid%20grocer%20Jiffy%20is%20to,focus%2C%E2%80%9D%20the%20company%20said.\" target=\"_blank\">stopped deliveries<\/a>altogether to focus on software.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAll those logistics\u2013supply chain\u2013IT companies that rely on cheap money, you can see they are now panicking,\u201d says Roel Gevaers, professor at the University of Antwerp, who researches last mile delivery.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Part of the problem in Belgium, where Gorillas charged consumers 1.8 euros ($1.90) per delivery, was that demand stayed low. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wired writes: Quick-delivery empires are crumbling across Europe as investors put an emphasis on profits.
