In a masterclass with the renowned scholar and interaction designer Janet Murray we shall explore how interactive narratives can help to create engaging experiences, and support people\u2019s critical and problem-solving capacities. During the masterclass, students will work on creating a concept and very rough prototype for such an intertactive narrative, under the guidance of Janet Murray and UU staff.<\/p>\n

The masterclass is part of a collaboration between Utrecht University\u2019s Media & Culture Studies department (MCW) with the Netherlands Film Festival (NFF) in the framework of the \u201cNFF Interactive: Storyspace\u201d program. This program takes place on 27-28 Sept 2017, where Janet Murray will give a keynote talk (on 28 Sept. 13:00 – 13:40). Murray’s seminal book\u00a0Hamlet on the Holodeck: The Future of Narrative in Cyberspace<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(1997) has been an essential read for everyone interesting in the future of storytelling through digital media. Her work has been critical in establishing the foundational thinking about the potential of games as storytelling platforms within the then emerging field of game studies. Recently, an\u00a0updated version<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Hamlet on the Holodeck <\/em>was released which renewed a long-lasting\u00a0discussion<\/a>\u00a0on the relationship between games and narratives, showing that the book’s concepts are still seen as both relevant and controversial. As an internationally recognized interaction designer, Murray kept pushing boundaries of digital media’s potential resulting in the book\u00a0Inventing the Medium: Principles of Interaction Design as a Cultural Practice<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(2011), hailed by Henry Jenkins as “an epic accomplishment, one which we will all be mining for years to come”.
